Yoga - Benefits and Pitfalls

"The yoga we practice is not for ourselves alone, but for the Divine; its aim is to work out the will of the Divine in the world, to effect a spiritual transformation and to bring down a divine nature and a divine life into the mental, vital and physical nature and life of humanity. Its object is not personal Mukti, although Mukti is a necessary condition of the yoga, but the liberation and transformation of the human being. It is not personal Ananda, but the bringing down of the divine Ananda - Christ's kingdom of heaven, our Satyayuga - upon the earth." - Aurobindo

Greater experiments with yoga don't follow through any specific convention. Yoga is an art and science. The science of yoga is a winding staircase of hata yoga ( food control, breath control, mind control ) all in one. Most of what we know of the science of yoga is from aseevaga or jain monks. The reason why it's said it's dangerous without a guru by the side is because there are times when your soul might sway away from your body!! Though it doesn't happen easily. But the repercussions can be dangerous if you are in worldly life..

The path of yoga as an art is for everyone. Even this needs a guru as its a tailored approach for every person. The books which detail these are many and sometimes even contradictory. For e.g first 32 stanzas of Soundarya Lahari in comparison to Bhaskar Raya (vari vasya rahasyam). Many of these books needs a guru.. to clarify inner meanings thereof..

Kundalini shakthi and its movements with Transcendatal Meditation

Mind focus practices will create these scenarios. The risk is every human is stuck in different stages of worldly bondage and yogic maturity state. A true Guru knows your limitations (psycic vibrations) and will suggest a stepwise path. For e.g jaggi explains how he lost vijji, his spouse, to a miscalculation, in his book. Is it that dangerous?, yes it is. I have seen stages where I couldn't have come back to life without a timely soul coming to my rescue. The path is treaded with our bondage and our causal leftovers in life..

For e.g a scientist who has spent 50 years in search of a theory is also yogi. Its just that his one chakra will be a 1000 times sharper than rest..

With many gurus, I have heard martial arts, conventional arts have been suggested as yogic practices.. It mostly is about what's the easiest way to bring mind control effectively.

Its not the same for everyone. What one person achieves with music, other may with martial  art. But it has to be tailored not just based on his/her wish but whether it will open up a portal for him/her to a higher dimension. That's the only focus for a true Guru..

Sutra system in Hinduism Jainism and Buddhism is a very effective tool for initial stages. All yogic scriptures are sutras.. 4/5/7 syllables or 16 syllabled concoctions to see where your mind gets stuck.

Gita, kural, Vedas, Upanishads and Many more are sutras which can become a mantra for opening a portal. That's why you read scriptures with a Guru, he could catch hold of the Sutra that resonates with your causal bondage and convert it into a nada bindhu. As a linga, chakra or spadika etc..

Nada bindhu..

The problem today is there are enough fake gurus.

Anyone can become a guru today because people who come don't seek salvation!! Its a Bazaar today and there are bazaar voices also!!

From a explanatory writing...

"Sannyasa means samyak nyasaH or proper renunciation. You may outwardly give up things, but if you have not given them up inwardly, they remain with you and continue to bother you. They continue to harass you. Sometimes, out of some kind of a fascination or some kind of an avega or impulse, somebody may take up sannyasa.

If, adequate inner maturity is not acquired then he is harassed by his past samskaras. It is possible that on the way he may get distracted. Therefore, he may not be capable of living the values that he wanted to live. Such a person is perhaps addressed in this verse.

MudhaH, Oh lost one, or oh distracted one, understand why you have put on these clothes. How do you fail to see the values by which you should be living, or the objectives with which you have taken up this life? Otherwise, wearing these clothes continue to be merely for the sake of the belly, udaram."

Coming back to key question, why is it dangerous?

A child who is maniac about ice cream is normal till ice cream van comes. He has to pay, father has to give money etc. But what if he can create his own ice factory but his mania remains. He will create an ice world for himself and will never come back to the world. Or he will collapse of over eating. When you remove causal limitations, the soul should be devoid of weakness or has to be numbed of that weakness at best. Then probably he will give free or paid ice cream for all.

A father might give only ice cream coupons till such time he is out of his mania, will give a Sutra to get him ready for that, take him to Artic where there is just ice but cannot eat a piece, might give a natural crystal which can reduce his yearning but cannot be eaten.. eventually when he comes out of his causal bondage, he becomes an ice cream wala!!

Coming to guru..

Vedatri maharishi, Vallalar, Aurobindo and Narayana guru and many others also are true seekers in this path to name a few.

Compared to modern teachers (Jaggi, Mahesh yogi, Osho ), the sanmarga sanga is very focused on simplified life, sanmarga and self realisation. Chances are better in these conventions.. my view again..

In tamil context, vedatri maharishi has done a phenomenal job. But the essence of his dogma has not reached the masses, same as, vallalar or Aurobindo because people were not ready in tamilnadu. But in Kerala Narayana guru has done better transformation as he was able to create a disciple group which plowed the soil for long and hard. Again people were ready mentally...

The failure of Aurobindo, vallalar and vedatri maharishi movements in reaching the masses is not good for tamilnadu in the longer run. Jaggi is trying to compensate for that. But his style will not work in tamilnadu unfortunately..

Last speech of mahaswami. He says prophets will be coming.. good news. they are with us.. better news..

Shree vasanth is not alive now. But his works are phenomenal in this world. He is not even known to few lacs people. But his mission was galactical. And he has built many working prototypes in his lifetime. Gave a fresh breath to neo vedic and agnihotra community worldwide. I consider this to be a lifesaver for the masses. But world is complex.. Maharishis won't matter for bazaar!!!

The problem with bazaar shop is that you loose freedom of expression. A small dukan on the way to forest is better. It sells essentials for a long journey or life saver tablets or a map if you are lost. Quality is more important for Maharishis..

open a portal to eternity.. have keys..

Even if it's your kin, the question will be, "what do you want? we don't sell bazaar items"

Enlightenment is a process right. knowing your destiny to some degree of relevance. As I said, apart from Jnana, Mani, Mantra, Oushada are needed for mortal souls.

Whether it's your mother, brother, spouse or children or best friend, "what do you want?" or "what to do, you want?" , is the real question... A true seeker will get his answer / turning point right...

Some references...

Aurobindo says....

India of the ages is not dead nor has she spoken her last creative word; she lives and has still something to do for herself and the human peoples.

Hidden nature is secret God.

That which we call the Hindu religion is really the Eternal religion because it embraces all others.

To listen to some devout people, one would imagine that God never laughs.

Spirituality is indeed the master key of the Indian mind; the sense of the infinitive is native to it.
